Stowe (1811-96) was an American abolitionist and author, best known for her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852). Published four years later, Dred is also an anti-slavery novel, the title character being a "maroon" - an escaped slave who inhabited the marshlands of the Great Dismal Swamp, preaching against the evils of slavery and inciting others to escape.
