Ed Westcott, January 20, 1922 - March 29, 2019. The 29th person hired for the Manhattan Project. The official photographer for the Clinton Engineer Works and later the Atomic Energy Commission and Department of Energy. Without Ed's black and white images the history of Oak Ridge would not be nearly as visible nor understood. His legacy of photographs will continue to be valued by future generations.
Author Biography:
Ed Westcott was my friend. I met him late in his life and for most of the time I knew him he was restricted by a stroke and unable to speak. Yet, his mind was clear and he could remember well. He and I communicated by phone as he was better able to speak when he was not in the presence of the people with whom he was attempting communicate. He autographed photos for me to sell in charity auctions. He showed me 16 mm film he had made of him getting into a helicopter to take aerial photographs of Oak Ridge and of him climbing the water tower on Pine Ridge from where he made the iconic panoramic image of Oak Ridge.
