Description

Chapter one opens with the introduction of a sensational eight-year old girl named Ellen G. going to the store with her dad. We quickly discover that the 'G' stands for grammar and the eight-year old always carry a pocket dictionary, eager to learn new words whenever and wherever she goes. In chapter one, Ellen G. learns the definition of words such as sporting goods, lures, supplies, and food pyramid while shopping with her dad for their fishing trip with her friends Sally Science and Matt Math. 'Jumpin Jehosophat' is one of the many catchy phrases used by the main character to allow the reader to see more than a glimpse into the exciting world of Ellen G! Chapter two evolves through the interaction of Ellen G., Sally Science, and Matt Math. Ellen G. shares the words that she has learned with her friends and in return, Matt Math shares with her how to multiply by tens! The reader quickly identifies Matt Math as a boy of logic, who carries a book bag and a calculator wherever he goes. Matt Math is excited by the concept of numbers and even more excited to share the knowledge with others! He demonstrates to Ellen G. how to break large numbers into smaller numbers to simplify multiplication. By the time the lesson is over, Ellen G. fully understands the renaming and grouping properties of multiplication and is ready to multiply any large number that is a composite of the number ten! Chapter three is all fun and play as Ellen G's father teaches them 'My Sunshine', a state song for Louisiana. Sally Science, dressed in her white lab coat and equipped with her scientific journal, educates Ellen G. and Matt Math about the properties of water and why every living thing needs water to survive. Even Ellen G. lends a helping hand as she defines the words atom and state! The reader becomes enamored by the children's jovial response towards learning. Ellen G. Goes Fishing is an instant classic that will promote the excitement of learning among young readers!
