"Single disc for a 24gb game...."
2 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

First off, Mighty Ape did their part flawlessly, got everything here on time, secondly I have yet to play the game so this rant is not about that but about Bethesda's decision to only include 5.2gb of the 24gb game in the retail edition, that means even though the retail store kept its end of getting the game to me on release day, I cannot PLAY it on release day cause I have to spend the rest of the day downloading the rest of the game which SHOULD of been included on the disc which makes me question the reason for even bothering saying that this IS a retail edition, its an over-glorified disc which doesn't even have HALF of the data, I could of easily spent the majority of yesterday preloading it from Steam, BUT NOOOO Bethesda has to cop out on the RETAIL COPY! They seemed to do well on ESO, I got multiple DVDs for that but they suffered here, they should just lead the adoption of blurays for PC instead of burning customers (slightly)…

"Thanks for wasting my time Besthesda."
2 stars"

“Note”

Mightyape service and shipping time was excellent as always. This review is based on what Bethesda have done with retail copies.

Pre-order the disc so I can play on launch, but find out game only has 5/24Gb on disc.

I started downloading at 10.30am and it'll take me until 8pm to finish.

Bethesda said on twitter that was their way (being done the past 10 years…) of combating piracy. This only screws with legitimate customers, pirates will pirate a game regardless.

Spending almost 1/2 of launch day downloading makes me wish that I had just waited and downloaded a pirated version when it appeared.

Probably would've been faster too.

Not really an improvement on Fallout 3 and New Vegas, dialogue has been cut out and simplified.

"Great game!"

One thing (out of many things) that I like about fallout 4 is the base building. Over all Awesome game, great DLC.

"This is one very cool game."

The only downside to buying this game is the initial download, which for me was about 30 GB. After that it's all good. Excellent beginning (unlike Skyrim or New Vegas), good movement and weapon control, and great 50s-style aesthetics. You can visit a sleazy bar and chat up the singer, or pound around in your power armour slaughtering ghouls. As you'd expect, money and good gear are hard to come by early on, but you progress nicely. The best thing: this feels like a game for grown-ups, not 10-year-olds. One very cool game.

"Fun but gets repetitive"
4 stars"

This was my first Fallout game and I really didn't know what to expect (I just bought it due to all the hype) and oh boy I mad a great choice. The game didn't really have any deep aspects to it as in moral constraints as many people have said but the story is still awesome, gameplay is great. The map is absolutely huge and I'm still in the process of discovering new quests and locations. I really love the freedom this game gives you in terms of choice, you can kill whoever you want to, do whatever you want to! but the game got very repetitive afvter completing the main quest. The side quests are all about going to a location, fetching someting/resuing someone, kill some enemies and return home and earn some caps. Overall this game is one of the best games I've ever played but there are room for improvements

"Misleading but still incredible"

So first off I want to say pretty much the same things as the other reviews here. What you get in the box is NOT Fallout 4. You get 3 bits of paper and a disc with only 5 gbs out of 25 gbs of Fallout 4 on it. The rest has to be downloaded. Quite frankly this sucks. Officially Bethesda have said that this is designed to reduce piracy but all its really done is angered a lot of people. The whole reason why I bought the retail copy in the first place was because I have limited bandwidth. Nowhere on the game box or in the required specifications does it mention this.

Once I had the game downloaded I then had to get it running on my computer. This isn't exactly smooth sailing for me but I got there eventually. There are a few glitches that I've come across but overall the game seems to be running quite smoothly. One final criticism is the dialogue. There is a fully voiced player character which adds to the immersion of the game, but your dialogue options are broken down into a couple of words around a wheel which don't always accurately portray what the character will say once that option is selected. Now with the flaws I've listed you may be wondering why i've still rated it as highly as I have. To be honest it's taken me a couple of attempts to write this. The fact that you don't get the complete game in the box angers me but that is more than outweighed by the game itself. Fallout 4 is immersive in the extreme. The story (so far) is great, the characters are realistic and yet still retain that uniqueness that makes Fallout the series that it is. The combat is far better than Fallout 3 and New Vegas (where it was next to impossible to do any serious damage outside of VATS); while it is still a far cry from a full blown FPS, it can still be fast paced and rewarding. The Wasteland itself is much more alive than the Capital Wasteland of Fallout 3, and the emphasis on exploration and discovery is still there allowing you to completely abandon the main quest if you choose and just go off on your own. Finally the new crafting and settlement construction is a fantastic addition to the franchise, allowing you to create your own band of survivors and keep them safe as well as building yourself a fortress you can call home. Fallout 4 had the potential to be game of the year. In many respects it deserved to be game of the year. There is no experience quite like playing Fallout. There are people who will tell you that its basically Skyrim with guns, but even though the same basic ideas are present in both Bethesda games, the atmosphere in Fallout is unique and can't be replicated. There is no doubt about it, Fallout 4 is a 5 star game. But the disgusting way that Bethesda has quietly gone about releasing the retail version of the game is a huge let down and that's cost it in my eyes.

"Decision suspended" Purchased on Mighty Ape

Not much to add to the existing reviews except echo the sentiment that it would have been nice to get some warning on the box that there would be a substantial amount of content to download before you could actually play the game. Kind of wrecked my Christmas gaming experience with ten minutes of hands on after a 5+ hour download. Thanks for nothing Bethesda. Kudos to the mighty team at Mighty Ape though – outstanding service as always.

This game has managed to entertain me forever and a day, and as always, great service(arrived the next day!)

"Why is there a huge mutant cow in my shack-"

Fallout 4 is an obsessive, addictive open world into which it is all too easy to pour a couple hundred hours.

The main story is reasonably compelling, (especially by comparison to studio stable-mates like Skyrim), blending themes that will be familiar to fans of Bladerunner and Battlestar Galactica into Fallout's signature post apocalypse.

The game is at its best in its near-endless enticement to delve and explore the strange and shattered territories of the ‘Commonwealth’. Additional impetus for exploration is thrown in by way of the game's settlement management and crafting systems – you will find yourself gleefully hunting down pencils, hotplates and abandoned aluminium cans to build another house, farm,or upgrade to your equipment.

The usual Bethesda caveats apply – frequently dumb AI, weird bugs and curiously overlooked plot details, but by large these fall soundly into the territory of odd-but-endearing rather than game-breaking.
