Description

Excerpt from Friends' Intelligencer, 1921, Vol. 78 Mr. Lantz had many contacts and conversations with the Bolsheviki prisoners in the Polish camps where the Unit delivered a great deal of soap and medical supplies. He found the Bolshevik soldiers to be on a little higher plane than the majority of Slovak armies. Most of the 'stories of terrorism he said were absolutely untrue. Just before the Bolsheviki advance the Unit left food so that the children could be fed as usual in the community kitchen. When the army found that this was food for children they did not touch it. All through the country-side they left the peasants their small domestic animals, such as pigs, and chick ens, but as is the way with most armies, requisitioned the horses and cows. They often left poor people all their belongings and took what they needed from the rich. Bridges reported to be torn down, Mr. Lantz found standing. Most of the Bolsheviki prisoners were intelligent, stalwart men. The war itself, com pared to the one the world has just passed through was a mere back alley fight for neither side had the big guns nor poisonous gas and other modern war conveniences. The few aeroplanes used were manned by English and American volunteers who were out for some more excitement.
