"Takes a bit of getting used to."

When I first started playing I was thoroughly unimpressed. In fact I hated it. I couldn't help comparing it to G2 and was on the verge of shelving it indefinately. But I gave it a chance and eventually really got into it. It took a while but now I'm really enjoying it, even though I do have a few complaints.

My biggest complaint is there's no anti-aliasing, as amazing as that is. I also don't like the combat system. The problem is whenever someone is hit they recoil, and they can't take any action while they're recoiling. So nine times out of ten whoever hits first and fastest wins. So fighting comes down to clicking rapidly at the target until they die. There are other moves you can do, but if you try anything fancy you'll probably just immediately die. Parrying's pointless, and therefore so are shields.

Some of the details, like the heroe's face and many of the armour suits and weapons, leave a lot to be desired. In my opinion most of the armour looks stupid too. How I miss the cool merc armour from the other games.

Big improvements are the inventory and character sheets, the dialog box and the journal. They actually look attractive this time as well as being functional.

There's lots of exploring to be done and loads of quests. The music's nice too, if a bit repetitive.

So it's good, but not as good as G1 or 2. Just give it time and try to judge it on it's own merits and I'm sure you'll like it.

One technical tip: I suggest turning mouse smoothing on the X axis right down to stop the sluggish way the camera swings around.

"A very enjoyable RPG"
5 stars"

This is a game I thoroughly enjoyed playing. It is challenging and doesn't hold your hand when there are missions to complete. The environment is large and definately non linear with lots and lots of exciting and interesting places to explore and things to do. The land is very “real” looking and filled with plant life and wild animals.
The story line is very interesting and how you play dictates how the game ends. The inventory is very easy to use as it is nice and simple. The music is pleasant and fitting with the game. I found playing first person was easier for me, tho third person is more the default. The fighting is a bit of slash and hack, but using the bow and arrow is great. I would recommend getting the latest patch to fix the quirks, but overall this is a very fun game :)

"addictive"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Highly addictive though slightly annoying that you can't chose your character – i haven't played the Gothic games before so never knew this. Still i am enjoying the quests but occasionally get trigger happy on all quests whether they are for good or evil (all a matter of view really) so i guess i should stick to a side and move on. Would suggest you sit down and actually read the booklet before playing unlike myself who just jumped in and have made a few stupid choices in using my points. Anyway it has kept my attention for quite a few days – enjoyment for those that wish to escapte the dreary reality of day to day work and don armour to fight the deadly beings in Gothic 3.

"The best RPG I have ever played"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I have just finished playing this game for the second time (which is a first for me).

In my opinion the best feature of the game is the graphics. I would often take time out from the action to climb to a high peak or tower and enjoy the detailed and stunning scenery within this extremely large world.

The game itself is challenging at the lower levels, but from Lev20 upwards it becomes increasingly easier (depending of course on the skill and attribute choices made earlier).

"Stay away from Jowood!"
2 stars"

Jowood games have so many bugs its not funny. Its like they half finish a game then sell it to the public and expect them to download the other half to fix all the problems. The Guild 2 was just the same. Its games like these that make me enjoy my console games… just put them in and play, no worrying about whether its gonna work if you buy it.

"Alright"

Gothic III is alright, but not as good as Gothic II. The Controls are totally different, they involve the mouse now, and not just the Keyboard. Also, the attributes system has changed a lot. Its not really a sequel, it's more like a different game set in the Gothic Universe. After playing it the first time I was a bit dissapointed. It's below the standard that the Gothic II Addon “The night of the Raven” set.
