Description

Excerpt from Harvard University in the War of 1861-1865: A Record of Services Rendered in the Army and Navy of the United States by the Graduates and Students of Harvard College and the Professional Schools The collection of facts to illustrate the part taken in the war of 1861 - 1865 by Students of Harvard College or of other departments of the University, was begun as early as 1862. The first roll of honor, as it was the custom of that day to call such lists, was printed in the Boston Courier in March of the last-named year, and more extended lists were published in the triennial catalogues of 1866 and 1869. The Corporation and the Committee of Fifty appointed to build Memorial Hall have constantly had in mind, however, a fuller and more satisfactory record, which should include not only those who died in the ser vice, but also those who offered themselves to the country, yet whose lives were spared.
