Description

The Congo is wracked by malnutrition, disease, crime, corruption and warfare. At his inauguration speech in 2019, President Félix Tshisekedi promised action to boost the flagging economy, hold down prices and reduce corruption. Also, Michelle Bachelet, the UN high commissioner for human rights, called on the country’s government and the international community to “seize the opportunity that currently exists to lift the country out of its deadly cocktail of conflicts, human rights violations and chronic socio-economic problems.” So far, however, neither Mr Tshisekedi nor Mr Bachelet has been able to push through significant reforms – with violent extremist groups carrying out bloody attacks in January 2020, and killing dozens as the DRC plunges deeper into instability and political tension… Hence it is very important that anti-terrorist cooperation is improved in the Congo – with the assistance of the international community – to restore rule-of-law, human rights, peace and prosperity in this beautiful region.

"[...] If you have the three other nuclear power plants without any off-site power, and you can't restart them because the grid is down, it's like three enormous ticking timebombs. All of this combined means we're talking about the most dangerous moment for nuclear security so far."
