Excerpt from Historical Papers, 1912 With this issue a change is made in the title Of this publi cation. It was initiated in 1897 as An Annual Publication of Historical Papers by the Historical Society of Trinity College under the supervision of the Department of History, and appeared annually until 1901, when Professor Bassett, of the Department Of History in Trinity College, became editor of the South Atlantic Quarterly. In 1905 publication was renewed with Series V. Since then it has been impossi ble for the Papers to appear annually. One reason for this has been the foundation of the John Lawson Monographs by the Historical Society in 1910. In the meanwhile the North Carolina Conference Historical Society has been accumulat ing material for publication and by arrangement made with a committee of that body, consisting Of Rev. W. W. Rose and Rev. M. T. Plyler, that Society now endorses and con tributes to the Historical Papers. For these reasons the words Annual Publication and Under the supervision of the Depart ment of History have been dropped from the title page, and the name of the North Carolina Conference Historical Soci ety has been added thereto.
