Horizon: Zero Dawn reviews

The Game runs beautifully, I have a standard ps4 console and one of LG's entry level 4k televisions and right from the opening and half hours play I am impressed. Do not be discouraged by the ps4 pro stamp, standard ps4 performance is impressive.

I thought I would finish the game before I did my review of it, that's mainly why it took so long for me to do it, I passed the 50 hour mark from exploring, doing all the side quests and unlocking all the machine hacks from the cauldrons.

I have to say this game has far exceeded my expectations, not only by the sheer size of the world, the number of machines in the game, the render distance, the number of AI on screen at once, but the fact that it also has a great story to go with it. When I purchased Horizon all I was expecting was a game with fun combat, I got that and a lot more.

The story does a good job of creating characters with fleshed out backstories showing there motivations; from greed, to fear, to love, to beliefs. Even a lot of the characters in side missions get that treatment and most side missions have a bit of story to go with them not just track this, fetch that, kill this enemy. There can even be some little surprises in some of the side missions also.

The combat is as expected quite excellent, despite the smaller number of weapons/gear you have available, it is the way that they interact with the machines that makes it impressive, how taking off certain parts don't just disable a function but also change the way an enemy fights, the physics of the machines are very good.

The way the game doesn't hold your hand with things outside of the initial tutorial (IE the child section) is a good choice because it makes you figure out how to do things your own way. When you start you are very weak and need to use stealth a lot because a lot of machines in the world pose a very real threat to you. But once you gain machine hacks, better weapons and start to learn how machines act and what strategies work best on them, you start to get to the point where you can freely roam out knowing that you can safely fight the enemies you will encounter. It is not until you start to reach the end game, when you have the best armours, the best weapons, all kitted out with the best modifications available to you that the challenge starts to fade away, but it is never gone, there will always be situations where you can't just barge in without risking getting overrun.

I haven't been this impressed by a game since Far Cry 3 launched, sure it suffers from the same issues that all open world games do i.e. Parts of the map you can get stuck in, and sometimes you don't snap correctly to the jump points and grab points which can cause some frustration. But aside from that I have had no problems with the rest of the game. I'm actually a little sad that I finished it, but I'm glad that Guerilla has announced there will be story expansions. I will definitely give this game a deserved 10/10. It's just too bad that it has been overshadowed by breath of the wilds launch, it deserves better publicity.

Only played probably half way through the game but it is a wonderful open world game with plenty to do. Combat is refreshing and challenging while the story is really interesting. Must buy :)

Horizon Zero Dawn defines the action and adventure RPG genre. Horizon takes different elements from multiple games and gives it a different twist that is refreshing. But what it really does well is the combat, it manages to juggle different mechanics and somehow makes it work. The first part of the story does drag a little but after the halfway point of the game it hooks you in and never lets go.

Out of this world, amazing game.

Absolutely the best rpg money can buy at this time on ps4. Stunning graphics, gripping story and polished gameplay. I have been waiting for years to have a game that holds my interest, and horizon zero dawn does just that. Stella game!!! Must buy it, well worth it at full price

Graphically its amazing. Story is pretty good. Gameplay gets repetitive.

This game is absolutely amazing. The graphics are one of the best out there right now, second only to RDR2. Everything from the characters to the storyline as well as the setting are fantastic and there are very few games with such a high level of gameplay. If you have a ps4 then you'd be crazy not to buy Horizon Zero Dawn.

Ive put 50 hours into this game so far and i love it. A huge world to explore has plenty to find and do, the quests are different enough to keep it from getting boring and the massive range of ammo and weapons keeps it exciting. Its like Fallout vs Madmax vs Tarzan. Best game ive played in a long time

Horizon Zero Dawn consumes all of my spare time. It's a great game and I would highly recommend it to anyone that likes any type of single player game.

Stunning visuals and such an immersive experience. A must-play for all PS4 owners!

Really enjoyed the main story

I'm about 75% through the game, and the only problem I have with it is it's just too good, how am I supposed to get anything else done when I can't put this down. From your different outfits for different battles, (Aloy is a woman of fashion even in these hard times) to the selection of weapons, while the selection may be small the choices you have within each weapon and the way you mod them can make big differences depending on who or what your fighting at the time. Then there are the machines you are fighting, you can go all noise and bluster and take on everything in the area at the same time or you can sneak in and spread traps around, remove parts from the machines at a distance (successfully remove one of their guns and you can use it against them) and convert some of your enemies to fight for you, even the humble Strider (horse machine) can turn the tide when your under attack. All in all an excellent game and I will be sad once I've finished it, well until the next great game that is.

Great game. Great visual. Great overall experience

I preordered this game and managed to receive it on the day it came out to the public. The game opens with a short film introducing the main story, and I was stunned with how beautiful the scenery was, and that was just the start. Horizon Zero Dawn is such a different game and they really put all their effort into it. The graphics are perfect even for a standard PS4 which I use. The gameplay and combat is realistic and never gets boring. Even after I finished the main story there was still so much to do. This game is a must have, especially for people who have played The Last Guardian. Horizon Zero Dawn is definitely my favourite game.

Well worth it.

This is a good open world game. The open world combat is good and has a variety of missions to do. It has a good story and plenty of stuff to do as well as the main missions. Like the big open world map that has plenty of areas to explore.

Great story, Great atmosphere, Great game.

The game is phenomenal. Great graphics, VERY fun gameplay and a MASSIVE map. You can expect to spend up to 50+ hours doing main and side quests alone.

Have only just started playing this game but am already fully in love with its perfect combination of story, graphics, open world, side quests and combat.

This game is perfect. It has been a long time since I got stuck into a game. The characters, the world, the story. It's almost too good. I have plenty of things I need to do in the real world but can't seem to pull myself away from this game lol

Only one game before this has genuinely made me go ‘Wow’ out loud at any point, that game was the Witcher 3. This game goes beyond that.

It's a concept that has never been done before, and they absolutely nailed it. The story is compelling, the graphics are top notch, every fight is challenging, interesting and always intense. Some of the boss battles are just absolutely awe inspiring.

This is a MUST buy for the PS4, the most impressive game I've ever played. You know a game is good when you are sad that it is over.

This game is nothing other than amazing. It looks great, but you get sucked into the world to a point where graphics wouldn't matter anyway. If you love an RPG, Open World Experience or Hunting, this game is for you

Amazing Story line and game play with great graphics. Hours of content and plenty to do after you complete the main story. A must own for all PS4 owners.

I don't often finish games, but I'm hooked on this one. The thrill and challenge of hunting down a thunderjaw is still there every time. Deserves its high ratings.

This masterpiece of a game combines absolutely breathtaking environments, open-world freedom, addictive gameplay, and intense confrontations. This all occurs under the backdrop of a deeply interwoven mystery story that is well-worth unfolding. Besides the cool creatures, the lore, the relatable protagonist and the grin-inducing fun of the fighting mechanics, I cannot emphasise enough the sheer visual gorgeousness of this game: it has the most richly-realised, beautifully stunning and varied landscapes of any game I've played (from lush forests to frozen wastes, to deserts).

I absolutely love this game. Beautiful open-world adventure with an awesome story so far (I haven't finished it yet), and a variety of different challenges from machine hunting to raiding and taking over bandit camps. This game has different difficulty levels to suit player-style and ability.

Gorgeous game with fluid mechanics, stunning scenery and details. Seeing the city of Meridian for the first time literally took my breath away! Aloy is a great character and she moves with such grace and ease; she can climb and run with no effort. Story line is intelligent and solid, with great voice acting. Highly recommend for those of you who love a big open-world to explore, interesting enemies and locations, and loot to score.

Only downside for me was the courier dropped my game off at the wrong house (again :-(), but lucky for me I have honest neighbours. Game is great, couriers not so much…!

Large map with lots to see and do. Good story for the most part. Has a nice mash of elements from other games and I mean that in the nicest way possible

I bought this game at EB Games since I had a gift voucher. Got home and played it for 9 hours straight on a Normal 500gb PS4. Runs great and looks amazing. The style of how the game works reminds me of the Witcher 3. The Climbing is like something out of Uncharted (since you can only climb on ledges coloured a certain way). The focus reminds of me of Batman's Detective Mode. Its basically a bunch of good games mashed together. Which is not a bad thing :P I really enjoy this game so far.

Witcher 3 has become my all time best RPG experience. This is on par with that. With elements of Witcher, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, if you are an RPG fan, you should get this game. Do it now. You know you want too.

This game is absolutely amazing. It does pretty much everything right for an open world game. It doesn't do much new and exciting things but it does everything so dam well. It's one of the few games that I've played where I can't find anything really wrong with it even if I try. It is super fun and has a wonderful story that makes my imagination run wild. I recommend this game to anyone and everyone. Give it a go and please, listen to the story. It's one of the best parts about the game.

This is one beautiful game. Challenging and fun. Reminds me of Tomb Raider, Primal, and Dark Souls all rolled into one amazing experience!
