Diane, an attractive girl from the South of England follows the same path as any other girl from a middle class background, until she finds herself in bed with Susan, one of her closest female friends. With her forthcoming marriage to Dave and experiencing rejection from Susan, Diane decides to tell no one how she feels and ventures off to the South of France. Returning to England, she is now sure of her sexuality and starts to explore the possibility of living a gay existence. Then one night she meets a woman called Chris, which changes the course of her life for many years to come. Diane follows Chris to South Africa where she is met with a great deal of trauma and confrontation. Chris is not the woman she thought she was! Diane returns to the gay scene and meets some very confused women, experiencing more unpleasant encounters. Meeting a beautiful Italian woman called Isabella, she settles down. Living in a country where the political and social problems are affecting everyone's daily lives, a decision to leave the country is on her mind. But her heart keeps holding her back.
Eventually, she decides to leave the country as the violence has become unbearable and she no longer wants to feel or experience the fear of being attacked on a daily basis. While making preparations to leave, she meets a woman called Louisa who has an enormous influence on her. By the time Louisa realizes what she wants Diane must decide. Should she stay or should she leave?
