Ernst Troeltsch was descended from an old burgher fam ily which had settled for centuries in the vicinity of Swabia and Bavaria. He was born in ugsburg in 1865, the oldest son of a physioian in that city. From 1883 to laeghe studied Protestant Theolog at Erlangen, Gattingen, and Berlin.1 His interest centered from early youth upon history,2 and in 1884 he commenced the study of Jurisprudence as a key to the nudare standing of that subject. He soon turned to theology, how ever, because it offered at that time access both to metaphys ics and to history and because the science of religion was in volved in the constant interaction between history and philos.
