Description

For two weeks in 2018, internationally acclaimed artist JR brought his mobile photo studio to San Francisco and set out to create a portrait of the city in over 1,000 people. The individual portraits will combine to form a vast photographic mural to be installed at SFMOMA in early 2019. This book tells the story of the project and the story of the city. It features over 1,000 individual portraits, selected first-person accounts from participants, behind-the-scenes photos, a forward by JR, essays by artworld and San Francisco luminaries, and a removable poster of the mural, tucked in a pocket on the inside front cover. Covetable, cutting edge, and packed with rich content, this is a must-have for JR's legions of fans and for anyone who loves the City by the Bay.

Author Biography:

JR exhibits freely in the streets of the world. Drawing on his background as a street artist, he pastes over-sized black-and-white photos on walls, streets, and rooftops. His projects have taken him to the suburbs of Paris, the favelas of Brazil, the Israel-iPalestinian border, the streets of Tokyo, New York's Times Square, and beyond. He has won the TED prize, created the biggest illegal exhibition ever, been nominated for an Oscar alongside French New Wave legend Agnes Varda, created art for the 2016 Rio Olympics, made headlines with his recent installation along the US-Mexico border wall, opened a restaurant for refugees in Paris, and was named one of TIME's 100 most influential people in 2018. In every place and through every project, he celebrates communities and individuals, tells compelling stories, and changes the way we see art. He divides his time between Paris and New York.
