Valere, in order to win the miser's consent to the marriage, has entered his house in a semi-menial capacity, and has resolved to try and conquer the old man's affection by humouring him in every possible way. At Cleante's approach Valere withdraws. Elise is intending to inform her brother of the whole affair, when he fore stalls her by declaring his own passion for a poor but lovely young girl called Mariane. And so, while Harpagon's unnatural mean ness is brought into strong relief, the two pairs of lovers are introduced.
