Description

For more than forty years, the 1802 edition of Robert Burns's Letters Addressed to Clarinda provided the only record of his correspondence with Mrs. Agnes M'Lehose ("Clarinda"). It was from the letters printed here that Burns's early biographers first told the story of the Sylvander-Clarinda relationship. This facsimile has been scanned from one of the three copies of the original edition in the G. Ross Roy Collection of Robert Burns & Scottish Poetry, in the Department of Rare Books & Special Collections at the University of South Carolina. This edition includes additional pages with material drawn from manuscript letters in the G. Ross Roy Collection.

Author Biography:

G. Ross Roy is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English at the University of South Carolina and an honorary research fellow in the Department of Scottish Literature at the University of Glasgow. He has published widely on Burns and he has edited Burns's letters and contributed to the complete works of Burns. Roy holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Edinburgh and is honorary president of the Robert Burns Federation.
