The family were absent at their country seat, making their arrangements. Shortly after I was informed that there was a malevo lent misrepresentation, of my being the Miss Cary, the mistress of Wellesley Pole, who had been prose outed for having sold, or pretending to sell, a com mission. The statement had been accompanied with such threats, that, although my friends knew the cruelty and falsehood of it, they dared not receive me into their family, until I should publicly contradict so foul a report.
