"One Great Package"
5 stars"

Since its release in 2006, Nintendo's Wii has marked its place in gaming history. After the release of the Gamecube (which had some good games) many thought that Nintendo was over. Microsoft had entered the gaming market with the Xbox, and now the Xbox 360 (which is lacking in sales) and Sony's Playstation was feeling like the new king. However, PS3 sales were low at first, thanks to it's steep price and lacking number of games (this has all changed now, though)

But even two years on, the Wii is the top seller month after month after month. And it is for a good reason. I own every games console – even consider myself a hardcore gamer, but I still play my Wii (which I have had since launch) every day and it still is brilliantly fun.

Next year, Some pretty exciting additions are coming. Wii Motion-Plus is going to further revolutionize motion controls, and with the release of Wii Sports 2 is imminent.

One other thing, 2008 saw the release of Wii Fit, Wii Music but I do feel that the Wii still lacks the release of enough top quality AAA titles, sure, I still play Resident Evil 4, Wii Sports, even Mario Party or Mario Kart when friends are over, but Im hoping that Nintendo has some big things planned for next year, to ensure that my Wii will continue to see the love it does now.

"And now for something completely different..."
5 stars"

Probably the greatest innovation in gaming since its inception!

This is a console that is so much more than the sum of its parts, essentially this console is dragging us into a new interactive reality, it may not give us the in depth graphics of the PS3 or the x360, and it may not carry such block busters as Halo 3, but what other console gives you a workout at the same time as playing your games? And in all honesty, I can't remember the last time I had so much fun in a gaming environment as with the Wii!!

This is just what the doctor ordered! For many of us, our way of life sees us going to work, then settling in for the evening with only a DVD or a game to keep us company… what if that game required more than just a mental workout?

Nintendo have shown us time and again that innovation is their true skill, the Wii again leads the field of the consoles with it's innovative (yet, amazingly simple) interface, and a re-hash of some classic games, along with many new arrivals!

Wii sports on its own, as packaged with the Wii is enough to keep even the most hardy of console jockey's occupied for many hours! With its array of “quirky” games, even the most hardy of gamers (such as myself) can find many varied games to enjoy… sometimes in the least expected genre!

To play on one is to love it, to own one is to be the envy of your friends! The only niggle I could ever find with this is that you get merely one controller with what is obviously a party machine, and to expand for up to 4 players does not come cheap, but in the end… for those lazy (well, not anymore!) nights in, it's worth it!

Play and enjoy!

"FUN!"
5 stars"

Hardcore gamers will get bored of this fairly quickly, no doubt about it. It can also be expensive if you want all 4 remotes/nunchuks. You don't really need any more than 2 nunchuks though, and if you can get 2 extra nunchuks in combo with 3 games at the moment, so it's not so bad.

However, once you have them it is a joy. Most of the games are casual – you can pick them up, play for an hour or two then put away no biggie. There's not many games you would sit and play for hours on end, except maybe Zelda.

However, if you're after FUN! And I mean laughing with friends, by yourself, then the Wii is WAY the best. I've owned consoles/PCs for years, and rarely had genuine laugh our loud crazy FUN like I have with the Wii. There are really a lot of great fun games out there, though generally 3rd party manufacturers have done a poor job compared to Nintendo's first party titles. For example, Wii Sports Golf is STILL the best golf game out there sadly enough, even with Pangya and Tiger Woods ‘07/’08.

But by the middle of this year, the following titles will be available:

Mario Kart Mario Galaxy Zelda We Love Golf/Tiger Woods '09 (? – maybe later in year?) WarioWare Smooth Moves Super Smash Brother's Brawl Wii Fit Bully Scholorship Edition Spore Geometry Wars: Galaxies Mario Strikers Charged

That is a very impressive list of genuine top tier games. Yup, most are designed to be played with other people, but that's what the wii is all about.

As a side note: The Wii remotes and Nunchuks are WAY too expensive in NZ, considering the currency rate. There's something very wrong there.

"Everything I wanted it to be"
5 stars"

I was in two minds about the Wii because of the price, but was excited about the potential of the new control system. In the end I bit the bullet, and boy was I impressed!

It is impossible for anything hyped up to live up to all expectations, but the Wii got about as close to that as anything could. Family members who were casual gamers were able to intuitively play the bundled Wii Sports games, and a toddler was even able to steer a cow in a Wii Play mini-game (purchased separately) without any instruction when passed the Wii-mote!

It is early days, but it is clear that the new control system could (and should) be a real winner, and provides Wii with a true gaming point of difference that other consoles struggle to achieve. Sure, the graphics are never going to compete with the more powerful consoles, but what it lacks in graphics it makes up for in heart, style, and pure entertainment.

Nintendo intended for the Wii to bring fun back into gaming, and it certainly achieves this. This console should not disappoint anyone looking for something that offers the full range of deep and involved titles like Zelda, to casual and fun social gaming titles that the Wii hardware naturally lends itself to.

Finally, this is one of the best out of the box experiences ever. When you open your Wii, not only will you have a beautiful console to adore, but you get an excellent game included so you are immediately ready to go, as well as lots of genuinely fun things to explore in the Wii channels. These add lots of value that may not been apparent prior to purchase :)

A truly no regrets purchase that will make you the envy of your friends (young AND non-young).

"better than Ps3"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Well, ive had my Wii since lunch date, and its been used every single day since, We had a PS3 (found out it was like a flower, was pretty at first, then just rotted) Since this time my bother has sold his PS3 and purchased his own Wii. My whole family now enjoys many of the mutilplayer games (espc Wii Sports) Many of my friends who have visited and enjoyed the experiance have gone on to purchase their own systems, as they themselves enjoyed it so much. So to anyone looking for a system that is great for large groups of friends (or solo) and one that wont hurt the budget (come on PS3 = same price as a house) then the Wii is the way to go.

Because the nintendo uses controllers that have sensors and are wireless it is a great way of getting your dayly exercize without stepping a foot out the door! It comes with the sport game that has many different games you can try which all require you to move lots. I liked the baseball and the tennis the best give you a great arm workout as you swing that bat or racket around like there is no tomorrow.

"Fun for the whole family"
5 stars"

My nephews and nieces have never been as active or animated playing other games as they are playing Wii Sports. Wii is so easy to use that my 2 year old nephew has become a pro golfer!.. LOL

Three generations of my family have given Wii Sports a go and all have sweated it out and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

My verdict… its fun, interactive, easy to use, and cheaper than a gym membership! ;o)

"Different"
5 stars"

Look, lots of people have tried to explain why its such a fun console to play but little understand it. Nintendo has changed the console so that its not the games that are fun its actually playing the game that is fun. Although multi-platform games dont work well with the controller i have found this to be a bonus!

You cannot understand this console until you play it for yourself. Having been a gamer for most of my life i have noticed a huge difference in playing games on the wii and playing any other video game out there. I can't explain it in words but as soon as you pick up the controller and start playing you will notice it for yourself. its not for all though. Experienced players who like games such as halo and world of warcraft for the fact that they are good at the game will not enjoy nintendo's new approach to gaming (not saying that if you enjoy those games you wont like the nintendo wii) because it does take the same level of skill to play.

"A convert!"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I never used to think that much of Nintendo's stuff… Well, not enough to buy one of their consoles and the games they had on them.

Until now.

After seeing a trailer to Marvel Ultimate Alliance, which I'd played on Xbox, I was sold. I bought this and hired Call of Duty 3 for it. It rocks! I liken it to Sylvester Stallone holding the M60 and ammo belt in Rambo 2 for real life gameplay kicks.

Just make sure you avoid playing on a hot day or with too many shiny things nearby, like it says in the guide, otherwise it locks up/crashes/loses connection with the WiiMote. Played it again at night, and no problems, so yeah, otherwise fine!

"Love at first play"
5 stars"

I always been a hardcore sony man, until i brought a wii yesterday. I never had so fun much on a console and ive owned a few. Even my mum loves, it. Make sure you buy an additional remote and nun chuck so you can play the boxing game it is so much fun when playing against a mate. If you dont like to sweat or move around dont buy a wii but to me it was liberating to get so involved when playing. Cant wait to get my hands on madden and when they release tiger woods, and a proper boxing game would be a sure fire hit. And i think its the only platform that could do a cricket game and be fun, and thats possibly the hardest task in gaming. And dont knock it till you try it once you go wii, you never go back.

"GREAT"
5 stars"

The Wii is probably the most easy console to work with. The graphics are ok but its the Gameplay thats taken my heart. The Wii-mote can also be used on PCs which is also awesome. But overall a must have especially with the Component AV Cords. They do help if your a bit anxious at the graphics. It also improves Gamecube Game Graphics as well.

Also its funny how people can talk negatively about the Wii but still it keeps climbing the charts. Check out its little brother, the Nintendo DS. Because of this little fella Nintendo Japan up'd its finance forecast by 90%. Awesome Nintendo.

Only if Monococorp didn't relinquish its role in providing Nintendo's product to us New Zealanders.

"You won't regret it!"
5 stars"

I recently bought the Nintendo Wii and I am in LOVE with it!

It looks sleek and simple yet high tech at the same time and isn't an eye-sore too. My family, friends, friend's parents and cousins absolutely love Wii sports (that's the only game I've got right now) and the beauty of it is that you don't need to remember any buttons or anything! It's extraordinarily simple and tonnes of fun and unlike when I had my Ps2, no one would be interested and my cousins would just sit around and watch. Now we're jumping up and down looking like idiots playing Wii sports! Simply incredible – it's something which must be experienced first-hand to truly understand and enjoy.

In conclusion; buy it now – you won't regret it.

"Does your family despise it?? NO"
5 stars"

I bought this console on the launch night and what a bloody brilliant decision that was! Every one in my family loves and even my four year old sister can play it! This was worth every dollar and with the Wii sports in the package it just is the best deal. NO memory cards needed for saves, it has SOO many features and well..... some little game named ZELDA.

BUY THE Wii. BUY ZELDA AND ENJOY IT!!

"Easily the most fun console ever"
5 stars"

I was a bit skeptical buying the Wii, but at it's price it's very affordable compared to the other consoles, especially since it comes with Wii sports to keep you busy for a while. Anyway, I've written this review later then I expected because I've been so busy playing the Wii, it's very addictive especially playing Zelda, and Wii sports has it's own charm too. If you're thinking about getting a console this christmas holidays then this is the one to get!

"Awsome!!"
5 stars"

Nintendo has sparked a new kind of way to play games by getting you off the couch and actually playing the games. Competitors are more focused on graphics and sound and big huge memory chips and graphic cards that supposedly “enhance your experience”…But HOW is the question!!How can you enhance the experience by adding more effects like motion blur and a little weather to a game? BRING BACK THE FUN!!! This has been said a lot but yea…Where is the fun in games.....The Wii has brought all that back with games that everyone can enjoy.

The other consoles are like this.........X-Box 360-Hard, shoot-em-up games that people get frustrated at.....and other adult like games that everybody hate.......PS3-too pricy.......don't know any games yet…but WAY too pricy.Wii brought back the fun to games and made them so everyone can enjoy them. My opinion…the Wii.

"Xbox 360 & PS3 Eeater"
5 stars"

I just got my Nintendo Wii today for my birthday present and it's sooo fun and funtastic. The graphics are good but not excellent quality. The rule of innovation over emulation with the wii is a great step forward in the world of gaming. With exclusive titles like:

Mario Kart Zelda Mario Galaxy

and other fun games. Some disrepect the wii (and have no idea whats it's like to play one and actually don't own one) which is very sad for people like them because it's such a great machine. The PS3 costs as much as a few weeks rent of a house and also the Xbox 360 Elite is still quite expensive. The PS3 has no exclusive games which is sad but with the Wii going online is a snap especially with the Mii which you build you character anyway you want and that represents you when online. You can even surf the net using the Opera Browser.

Wii remotes and nunchucks are quite expensive but I think you'll only need one of each for two players (not unless your thorwing a party or something). So for only for a resonable price of $500.00 it's fun at its best for everybody.

"Awesome"
5 stars"

Well its been over a year since the Wii came out and what a great first year it was. Sure alot of really good games didn't come until later on this year but still when they did it was worth the wait. So you know how to play the Wii…you've seen the ads but you want to know is the console worth it? My answer is definitely. This is the most fun ive had with a console since the ill fated Sega Dreamcast which is still my favourite console ever due to the impressive amount of AAA titles. The Wii has some superb games at the moment as well.

Excite Truck Kororinpa Metal Slug Anthology Metroid Prime 3 Resident Evil 4 Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicals Scarface Super Mario Galaxy The Bigs The Godfather The Legend Of Zelda Twilight Princess

Be warned though when it comes to buying Wii games stick to what you know you will like…I've sold around 6 games already that I've purchased that have been really dissapointing. So don't get anything from ubisoft or sega at the moment as their games aren't that great…however Ghost Squad and Nights should be great when they come out. Capcom is producing some stellar titles on the Wii and Zack and Wiki will be awesome when it arrives next year.

Also the Wii is backwards compatible with cube games…I have Killer 7 and Sonic Mega collection. Also be sure to get component cables if you have an HDTV as it improves the picture immensly. Next year will be another good year for the Wii and you should really pick up one soon as its the best console of this generation…way better than PS3 and Xbox 360.

"Absolutely amazing"

Purchased on Mighty Ape

The Nintendo Wii was very easy to set up and get going, including everything you need to get started it even comes with a full game (Wii Sports) which is so much fun and lets you improve your skills in using the Wii remote or Wiimote. When my family walked past and saw how much fun I was having they all joined in playing the game which is what Nintendo designed it for. The Wii is well built and quite small so it can fit in many places safely. Another great product from Nintendo!

"Best gaming system EVER."
5 stars"

After playing games for over 15 years with the same old controls, I was starting to get bored of gaming…until I heard about the Wii.

I just picked mine up 2 days ago, and let me tell you, its the most fun ive ever had with a gaming console. No exaggeration.

You absolutely MUST get one…or you could just settle for the usual ‘graphics upgrade’ that Nintendo's competitors are offering…although, you know what they say; “You cant polish a turd”…

"Gets Boring Soon Enough"
2 stars"

One Month Ago I Couldnt Get Over How Excited I Was Whwn I Got My Wii. I Loved It And When I Started To Play Zelda I Was Even More Excited.

Three Days I Was Over Zelda…

When I Got Resident Evil UMbrella Chronicles I Was Thrilled Again And Loved It.

One Week Later I Finished Resident Evil…

Two Weeks Later I Got Super Mario Galaxy.

The Next Day I Was Over It Already.

The Wii Was My Years Biggest Letdown.

I Am Now Trying To Sell My Wii On Trademe And Will Likely Not Make THe Money Back I Payed For It…

If You Are More Than An Occasional Gamer Pick Up A Ps3 Or Xbox 360

After Playing Ratchet, Uncharted And Call Of Duty 4 i Realised Wii Just Wouldnt Cut It.

If You Have Enjoyed Xbox And Ps2 GET 360 OR PS3 YOU WONT REGRET IT

"i<3nintendo!!"

ahhhhhh why did i wait so long to write a review for this system?! i just read the first review on this page (at bottom)… LMAO… ahhhhh, nuff said…

for anyone who thinks that the wii is “overpriced” i think that's a little unfair considering i haven't seen a new console released as far back as i can remember for less than $500, most of the time they're even as much as $1200 on release!! so the price is hardly something to complain about. take out the cost of the remote + nunchuck that comes with the console and it actually equates to $350, LESS than that if you take away wii sports…

the one thing i was unsure of for like 5 minutes was that when i was buying a second controller it was gonna cost me $150 (remote + nunchuck), as generally controllers are around $50… HOWEVER, i VERY quickly got over this when i considered the fact that an xbox 360 wireless controller with ZERO extra/new features over the original xbox controller, apart from the fact that it is wireless (oops sorry, it's also got a “home” button :P~), is $80+… after pondering that for a moment i had no problem forking out $15 more for a controller that offers so many new features/technology that have not been used in a controller before, here anyway…

i think people are slowly starting to realise there's more to gaming than racing and first person shooters and that good graphics never beats good gameplay…

hmmmm, in 300 words i've only been able to talk about the price…

i fail to find ONE thing wrong with this console, so if you're “hum-ing” and “harr-ing…”

don't :)

you won't be dissapointed!!

"Simple, Elegant and Innovative"

The Console

Easy to set up, just plug it in, turn the Wii and the Wii Remote on, and you're away.

Controllers feel solid and as always everything's built to Nintendo's great standards.

Graphically more than fine, even on a 100" projector through composite. This topic's been done to death.

Great interface; using a pointer is so far ahead of thumbstick systems.

The Mii system is a blast. Creating your own avatars and sharing them with friends is fun and having random ones pop up on your console keeps you going back to check.

Online store is slow but being able to download classic games is great.

Wii Sports

Loads of fun. More suited to multiplayer where you can get the added benefits of competing against friends. Has training mini-games and fitness tests you can do also.

Having the Mii's that are on your console appear in the games adds a nice touch.

Tennis: This is the killer game. Compete up to 4 players in doubles matches. Swinging to play just can't be beat. Lobs, slams, top and bottom spin all there, but not too much like a simulator where you have to be a pro tennis player to play.

Boxing: Fast paced and a little hard to get used to at first but quite varied with high and low hits, dodges, and blocks.

Bowling: Feels quite natural and like you're in control of the ball.

Baseball. A little too simple as it's just a swinging game. Outfielding is not player controlled and pitching is very basic

Golf: Simple to play but hard to master well. Lots of replay value if you like golf.

For a pack in game that's designed to demonstrate the Wii controls in a fun way, this can't be beat.

"Over it..."
3 stars"

We bout a Wii Dec06. It was new, it was different, it was highly interactive etc.

Bought about 7 games while owning the Wii over a year that were cool for the way it used it's ‘Wii-motes’. The family loved it, friends and guests loved it but a year later… we're over it. The additional games we did buy were disappointing and we ended up buying games for the sake of having another game, rather than a game we were excited about and looking forward to (PS3 – SingStar, Heavenly Sword, Burnout Paradise-City, Eye Of Judgement).

The Wii Sports that the game comes with is fantastic for the first couple of months, but after that you will find it just sits there and collects dust. Wii Play that you get with the extra controller is a major disappointment due to lack of content. You would expect another Wii Sports type game however it doesn't even give you half the satisfaction of Wii Sports. Another disappointing issue we had for the Wii was the lack of GREAT games that followed it's release.

It was also fun to download the old MegaDrive and Nintendo games but after having a couple of gos at the games you'll probably find your money hasn't gone very far.

The online options, channels etc are fun to begin with but you'll find they just end up sitting there as well.

Watch out for the costly extras like the nun-chuks and additional Wii-motes. After purchasing an additional Wii-Mote and nun-chuck you may as well have bought a PS3 which has twice the grunt and much more staying power (GO SINGSTAR).

All in all a good price for a new age console but maybe this ones more for the gamer that doesn't game too much.

AWESOME! I myself do not have one but am buying one. Three of my friends have one and they are the most innovative design out there. Not only that, you don't feel like a nerd sitting there twiddling your thumbs on a ps2 or xbox controller. You are standing up and getting into it! SSB Brawl will be legendary!

"Good Initial Fun - Won't Last"
3 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

The Wii is great little console, but regardless of how cheap it is and how revolutionary the controls are, the fact remains that it is a novelty console.

I bought a Wii on launch from Gameplanet Store having always been a Nintendo fan, and it was great initially. Their were a few good launch titles, Wii Sports was a bonus with the console for free, but since then I bought a PS3 the Wii doesn't get a look in.

Which isn't helped by the fact a lot of the “party” type games, and if your a casual gamer thats probably a good thing, but not for me.

You can check through the history of game-time played in the Wii, and you can see 4 and 5 month periods where the console hasn't been used, which is very telling.

To summarise, the Wii will entertain you in the short-term and is good for kids, but as a long term “gaming console” it won't keep you enthralled for long like it does when you 1st get it.

"COOL!!! But not for me."
4 stars"

To start with i dont actually own the Wii and i dont think i ever will because thats just me. However Nintendo have really stepped it up and like seeing innovation in consoles. The Wii looks and sounds like tremendous fun to play for family and friends but all it comes down to is what sort of gaming your into. All these people slagging of the 360 or ps3 just because they have driving or fps games and that they are no fun really should just shut up!! I like games with realism and really good stories to them and also the odd gore fest game like Dead Rising. So the Wii isnt really for me and thats why i own a 360, however if your the kind of person that doesnt care about realism and just wants a fun for all the family gaming experience then im sure the Nintendo Wii is the way to go.

"Overall great console but more for fun "

The Wii is great but if your a hardcore gamer this isnt what you want. Great for family nights and entertainment with games like Wii sports and Wii sports resort. heaps of cool add ons like the Wii zapper and steering wheel. Great buy for familys!!

"so much fun!"
5 stars"

wii is unlike any other gaming console ever! it gets you moving rather than just siting one the couch. Its more fun because you actually do the movement that you would if you were really playing that sport. awsum for wet cold days when no one wants to go outside, just stay inside and play tennis or baseball etc. SO MUCH FUN!

"The best game ever"

This is a very fun game to play with your family sun or shine. There is such a variety of games for the adults to play after the kids have gone to bed and the games for kids this is the best game ever!

"Great with groups of people"
5 stars"

The wii is a great console it is great to play in groups of people on wii sports and wii fit. You can play it for hours me and my cousins had so much fun on it passing the controller around and playing boxing on it you also burn calories on most of the games. Great console

"Best Nintendo yet"
3 stars"

Well if you are looking to find a console to entertain the kids (or yourself), this is the way to go. It's great fun to actually get up off the couch and move around while you play your favourite games… LIKE MARIO!

The things to watch out for are:

  • kids tend to flail around while playing so dont have anything in the way of their spinning arms!
  • the wrist straps can come loose. ending in a wii controller through your screen!

*when your tired and just want something to play… you cant. Most games you have to move!
