"One of the best"
5 stars"

Pluto is written and illustrated by award-winning manga artist Naoki Urasawa, based on the 1960s manga “Astroboy” by the legendary Osamu Tezuka. In particular it follows the “Greatest Robot in the World” story arc but presents it in a darker tone and explores many of the themes in the original series in greater detail. The story follows the famous robot detective Gesicht investigating the case where a mysterious creature (human or machine) is destroying the strongest robots in the world.

Ideas of robots co-existing with humans, the difficulties these artificial intelligences are faced with, and their search for their own identities are explored in the manga. Some of the common questions concerning robots in sci-fi fiction also appear here: Are robots capable of emotions? Should they be treated as humans? Urasawa creates a story full of suspense, twists and turns, and develops each of the robots extremely well.

For those who already know the story, reading it will have you looking at each situation and each character from a different angle. For those who are new to the Astroboy universe, you'll find an extremely interesting futuristic world to discover, while being surprisingly philosophical. I highly recommend this series, it's definitely among the best manga ever released (from two of the best storytellers of the manga world).

Description

In an ideal world where man and robots coexist, someone or something has destroyed the powerful Swiss robot Mont Blanc. Elsewhere a key figure in a robot rights group is murdered. The two incidents appear to be unrelated...except for one very conspicuous clue - the bodies of both victims have been fashioned into some sort of bizarre collage complete with makeshift horns placed by the victims' heads. Interpol assigns robot detective Gesicht to this most strange and complex case - and he eventually discovers that he too, as one of the seven great robots of the world, is one of the targets.

Author Biography:

Naoki Urasawa’s career as a manga artist spans more than twenty years and has firmly established him as one of the true manga masters of Japan. Born in Tokyo in 1960, Urasawa debuted with BETA! in 1983 and hasn’t stopped his impressive output since. Well-versed in a variety of genres, Urasawa’s oeuvre encompasses a multitude of different subjects, such as a romantic comedy (Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl), a suspenseful human drama about a former mercenary (Pineapple ARMY; story by Kazuya Kudo), a captivating psychological suspense story (Monster), a sci-fi adventure manga (20th Century Boys), and a modern reinterpretation of the work of the God of Manga, Osamu Tezuka (Pluto: Urasawa x Tezuka; co-authored with Takashi Nagasaki, supervised by Macoto Tezka, and with the cooperation of Tezuka Productions). Many of his books have spawned popular animated and live-action TV programs and films, and 2008 saw the theatrical release of the first of three live-action Japanese films based on 20th Century Boys. No stranger to accolades and awards, Urasawa received the 2011 and 2013 Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia, and is a three-time recipient of the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award, a two-time recipient of the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize, and also received the Kodansha Manga Award. Urasawa has also become involved in the world of academia, and in 2008 accepted a guest teaching post at Nagoya Zokei University, where he teaches courses in, of course, manga.
