K-9 units are an essential part of every metropolitan policing agency; however, this is the very first scholarly work devoted to the field. Written by Charles Mesloh, an active handler and researcher in police use of canines, this volume covers police dog history, training, and deployment based upon scientific analysis. It explores the core functions of work dogs, and devotes chapters to scent related deployment, use of force, apprehension related deployment, and research and evaluation.
