Description

Report of the Commissioner - United States Commission of Fish and Fisheries, 1899 is a multi-volume book series published by the United States Bureau of Fisheries. This organization was established in 1871 and was tasked with studying fisheries and recommending solutions to noted declines in the stock of fish used as food for American supply and sale. The commissioner for this volume was George M. Bowers, an American politician who was the United States Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries from 1989 to 1903 and the Director of the United States Bureau of Fisheries from 1903-1913. Later in his career, Bowers would go on to represent West Virginia in the United States House of Representatives for four consecutive terms. The book begins with the Report of the Commissioner and continues with several reports written by other members of the bureau including: "Report on the Propagation and Distribution of Food-Fishes"; "Report on Inquiry Respecting Food-Fishes and the Fishing-Grounds"; and "Report of the Division of Statistics and Methods of the Fisheries." This text is also full of interesting information, including several species of fish found in the United States, fish related animals and insects, and region highlights of the fisheries in Louisiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Texas. . Together, these reports give the reader a historic glimpse of fish populations in the United States and the various fishery practices and problems. Report of the Commissioner - United States Commission of Fish and Fisheries, 1899 is an intriguing read for biologists, historians, and fishermen alike. While initially the content may strike the reader as dry, the acute attention to detail and the historical significance of this text are compelling in their own right and offer insight into fishery practices at the turn of the twentieth century. This book is approachable to any reader who is interested in the politics and history of fisheries in the United States.
