After playing the demo, I got very excited about RCT3. Being a fan of the
previous two games, the move to 3D seemed natural now that modern PCs are
capable of rendering large scenes. I have to admit, the graphics in this game
are jaw-dropping on a decent PC. The UK company that developed this game,
Frontier, headed by the same David Braben who wrote Elite in the early 1980's,
have really outdone themselves.
Unfortunately the retail version of the game is burdened with some really
glaring and nasty bugs, including crashes and savegame problems. However Mr
Braben himself has been active on the Atari RCT forum and has listened carefully
to the numerous bug reports and issues. As I write this, the first patch is
scheduled for release tomorrow (4th Nov) and this should fix almost all of the
major gameplay bugs.
Frontier have remained true to the original titles, retaining much of what
made RCT a success. There's a bit more micromanagement than I prefer, but the
sandbox mode allows you to create your own megapark in your own time, in your
own way. One outstanding feature of RCT3 is the ability to actually ride any of
the attractions in a first-person view. It's thrilling to build a crazy coaster
and then ride it at full speed with a bunch of screaming peeps. You can also
render to a movie or take screenshots.
I expect the bugs to be ironed out very quickly. When was the last time you
saw the CEO of a development company actively participating in a fan forum? Such
dedication to the fan base will pay huge dividends and help to craft this game
into something even more special.
