"Trainspotter's delight!"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

This is not a derogatory comment (see above) but rather those who sat by the line-side, visited railway sheds or hung around stations will simply love this book. It doesn't matter if you didn't live or visit the places mentioned in the 144 pages, if you were a railway enthusiast (or trainspotter) in the 1960s you will just delight in the story telling spun by the joint authors.

The vast majority of the photographs, (mainly black and white but also a few colour) were taken by the authors on unsophisticated cameras and occasionally it shows but much of the material is sharp and well composed. Bear in mind that these guys were amateurs and didn't purport to be railway photographers in the true sense of the word. They were just taking photographs at locations they were3 visiting. However, the book contains over 200 pictures and each is interestingly captioned. There are 130 different photo locations covered in the book, so a fairly broad coverage of England and Wales.

This is a follow-up book to the authors' first work “Moved by Steam”. As I enjoyed the current book under review so much I will make a point of getting a copy of their other book too.

Silver Link Publishing is renowned for printing good quality books and this one is no exception.

Mighty Ape's price is pretty amazing too – Under $20 and the RRP in Britain is twenty pounds! Get it while the offer is there.

Description

On 18 August 1959, Burton-upon-Trent, schoolboys Richard Inwood and Mike Smith met on a train. Subsequently, as members of the school's Locospotters' Club, they and their enthusiast colleagues, then in their late teens and early twenties, attempted to see, record and ride behind as much British steam traction as possible in its last years of regular service. From their homes in Burton they ranged widely over the BR network, from the Cromford & High Peak to the Somerset & Dorset, from Oxford to Oxenholme, and their first book Moved by Steam was a personal record of their travels. In it they conveyed what it felt like to be an enthusiast in those days when there was still so much to be seen, but when time and money were frustratingly short - Such was the popularity of the first volume Richard & Mike have once again dug into their archives to track back over the years 1967 - 1960. Supporting the entertaining text are more than 200 previously unpublished photographs, all taken by the authors at the time and thus captioned with a special immediacy that brings the story alive.

Author Biography:

Richard Inwood graduated from Oxford University in 1968, and subsequently trained for the Church of England ministry, being ordained in 1974. By 1995 he had risen to become Archdeacon of Halifax, an appropriate post since one of his predecessors was the eminent railway photographer Eric Treacy! He has been Bishop of Bedford since 2003. He is married with three daughters. Mike Smith is a graduate of Cambridge University, and after a varied career in local government and teaching he retired in 2000 as Director of Music at King Edward VI College, Stourbridge. He is still busy with piano teaching, composition and writing, and is a member of GORBS (Grumpy Old Railway Buffs of Stourbridge).
