Many of Gunawan Maryanto's stories are reinterpretations of Javanese literary texts which themselves were based on or inspired by episodes in the in the Mahabharata and other ancient Indian texts. Through their retelling, Gunawan shows himself to be part of a long tradition of self-examination and speculation about human motives, dharma, and fate.

Author Biography:

Gunawan Maryanto is a poet, playwright, actor, and theater director who has worked with the Teater Garasi drama company since 1995. Although best known as an actor and director, he has published several short story collections and poetry collections, including Sejumlah Perkutut buat Bapak, which won the Khatulistiwa Literary Award of 2010.
