Tessenjutsu is a Japanese martial art that emphasizes the use of the tessen, a folding fan typically constructed from decoratively patterned iron or steel plates. Historically, samurai and ninja carried the tessen as a concealed weapon, particularly when it was impractical or forbidden to carry more obvious weapons such as swords.
Utilizing the tessen, tessenjutsu practitioners execute striking, shielding, and grappling maneuvers. The fan could be enhanced as a slashing or thrusting weapon by sharpening its edges, and its collapsible construction facilitated its concealment. In addition, opponents could be blinded or distracted with swift flips of the tessen or by tossing substances such as sand or pepper.
While wielding the fan, Tessenjutsu also stresses the significance of maintaining appropriate posture, balance, and fluid movements. Tessenjutsu, a component of Japan's martial heritage, is occasionally taught in conjunction with other traditional Japanese martial arts, despite its lesser-known status in comparison to others.
