The new President of the University of North Caro lina is a Tar Heel by inheritance and by choice, but he is equally well known and valued outside the state. He came to the University from Washington, D. C. Where he served as Secretary of the Army under President Truman from 1947 until 1950. His record of service to the nation is one that brought him praise from national and world figures. President Gray's work as a newspaper publisher and radio station owner will provide an excellent background for his work as chief administrator for the University. A member of Phi Beta Kappa at Chapel Hill, he has shown himself a scholar by leading his gradu ating class scholastically. He assumed his duties in Chapel Hill in September and was inaugurated on October 10 in ceremonies attended by educational dignitaries from all over the United States and from abroad.
