Stephens, fecretary to the admiralty, Mr. Cook was appointed to the command of an expedition fitted out, at the requeft of the Royal Society, for the South Seas, with a view of obferving the tranfit of Venus in 1769, and at the fame time was raifed to the rank of Lieutenant in the Royal Navy.
