Description

Excerpt from The Black and Red, Vol. 8: December, 1922 This Christmas Term is fast approaching its close. We like to compare the opening and doings of each year's first Term, when we always have a number of new faces. We like to think they will remain with us long enough to become a part and parcel of ourselves. I refer to new boys, new masters and new matrons. We welcome them all. It is more pleasant to say Salvete than Valete. We have a long Valete list this year. Some have gone on to the University and some into Commercial life. We wish them all the very best. We shall always be interested in their future doings and shall be proud of their successes. We endeavoured to instil the right spirit both in the class-room and on the field. We tried to make them see'the all-importance of work and determination. We trust they learned to be true sportsmen, to put the ball in fair and square, to play the game. It is grand to fight in a contest when you feel that there will be no underhand scheming, no unfairness. But that victory will go to the side which shows the best skill and deserves to win. We schoolmasters hope that our boys will carry these high ideals into all their life's struggles. There will be many temptations to go crooked, but we ask them to remember their days with us when they were made to put the ball in straight.'
