Description

Excerpt from The Church of England Pulpit, and Ecclesiastical Review, Vol. 10: July to December, 1880 It may be said, perhaps, that it is enough that we believe in the truth of Christianity, and that we may safely leave our faith to hold its own and win its way, Without troubling ourselves much with the temporary opposition it excites. And we may grant at\once that Christianity can no more be made false by being disbelieved, than, if false, it could be made true by being accepted. But that should not check our efforts at defence. For, however true, it may yet be widely disbelieved; and those who are most persuaded of the eternal truth of the great facts on which our faith depends, may nevertheless well shudder at the possibility of men coming generally to disbelieve those facts, and to lead the life which in the long run they are sure to lead, when they have turned their backs alike upon the hopes and the restraints of the Gospel. God forbid that such a fate should be in store for Christendom Yet it makes one tremble to see how those who would go forth to meet the foe are often treated with a jealous suspicion or with a cold neglect, by those whose best interests they are serving. It makes' one almost despair to see how much more devoted Christians are apt to be to the disputes by which they are divided than to the service of the one Lord by which they are, or ought to be, united.
