Excerpt from The Court Theatre, 1904-1907: A Commentary and Criticism Dramatic criticism finds two kinds of readers; those who just glance at the plot and the names of the stars to discover whether a play is likely to amuse them, and those who, equally or even more anxious to discover this, are interested at the same time in discussions upon the merits and meanings of plays. To the former, dramatic criticism is simply a species of elaborated, garbled news, less trustworthy than a hint from an acquaintance; to the others it is an expression of Opinion upon topics which they are in the habit of discussing themselves. If a critic is interesting they read him, but with no more subservience than they would feel towards a writer who was not a critic: the direct influence of criticism is therefore, in either case, likely to be small. Judg ing, however, from the prodigious quantity of talk exchanged over plays and novels, readers of the latter kind are numerous enough; even allowing for the fact that-conversation upon art and literature is one of the commonest masks that polite ness finds for boredom.
