Description

Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art, Vol. 5: September to December, 1858 In these two earliest types of civiliza tion, the synthesis was affected not by the equilibrium and harmony of the sub ective and objective elements of human ife, but by the predominance of the subjective in India, and of the objective in China. In China there was a State, but no free mental action; in India much ia tellectual and imaginative development, but though there were ancient codes of law, as that of Menu, scarcely the rudi ments of a State. Hegel has acutely remarked, that history and a State almost imply each other, and are the reciprocal conditions of each other's existence. We observe, accordingly, that China has had a full and exact h1story from a remote antiquity, but little literature and no 8 calative philosophy; whereas India, t ongh abounding in poet and specula tion, 13 almost entirely wit out a history.
