The Duke of northum berland, then appointed Lord Lieutenant, was pleated, with his ufual public fpiritednefs, to countenance the defign: and as the bell regulated and politeft fiates have always afforded their patronage and afiifiance to tinder takings of this kind, and Ireland is the only Nation in Europe without its General Hifiory, a Cafe was printed, and prefented in the ulual form to the Irifh Houle of Commons; wherein it was fet forth, that befides the Ma nufcripts which I had collected from the public libraries and records at Dublin, there was an afionifhing number here relating to that Country, in the Council and Secretaries Offices, the Mufeum and the Tower, and in the Bodleian and Lambeth Libraries, the ufe of which towa1ds compleating a General Hiftory, would be attended with an Expence, that, without their allii'tance, it would be neither prudent nor practicable'to attempt.
