I inform the patient that I have the power of inducing sleep, and obtain the consent and gain the confidence Of the subject. I then quietly suggest the feelings of sleep, and gradually close the eyes by passing my hand over the eyelids, and almost always those of my patients whom I could influence fell into the hypnotic sleep in five or eight minutes. I selected cases who I thought would hypnotize readily, and who did not resist the attempt being made, and if I did not succeed within ten minutes or a quarter of an hour I gave up further trial.
