Description

Excerpt from The London Quarterly Review, Vol. 124: January-April, 1868 Lockhart says that Walter's regress in horsemanship probably reminds his father that it was time he should be learning other things beyond the department of Aunt Jenny and Uncle Thomas. Be this as it may, the Writer brought his lame son home 1778; and the same car, after trying first a little private schoo and then a private tutor, sent him with his brothers to the High School. His progress there was, by all ac counts, more eccentric than stead'y. He never had patience, then or in a er life, to attend to the technicalities of grammar or syntax; but his quick apprehension and powerful memory enabled im to perform with little labour the usual routine of tasks. His lace in the class was usually about the mid ls, with a tendency downwards rather than u wards. Yet his exceeding readiness, and a abit into which he fell of versifying such exercises as were taken from the Latin poets, won him the esteem and respect of the Rector, Dr. Adam. The following instance of his readiness is worth giving. It happened on one occasion that a stupid boy, boggling at the meaning of the Latin word cum, was asked, What part of s eech is with? The dolt replied, A an tan tive. The Rector, after a moment's pause, thought it worth while to ask the data, or head boy, whether with was ever a subatan tive. No answer was given by him or by others, till it came to Scott's turn, when he replied, And Samson said unto Delilah, if they bind me with seven withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and as another man.
