In regard to this point a safe rule to follow is to send every case of insanity to the nearest asy lum immediately upon the recognition of the disease. It is the opinion of an emi nent alienist that ninety per cent. Of the cases of insanity would recover if they were taken to an asylum within one week after the commencement of the attack. The only exceptions of sending insane patients promptly to an asylum is in cases of ex treme physical weakness, such as some cases of puerperal mania following severe hemorrhages, and mania or melancholia in the last stages of pulmonary phthisis.
