Description

Excerpt from The Military Surgeon, Vol. 44: Journal of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States; January to June, 1919 At the incinerator each bucket of mixed fecal matter and refuse is fed regularly and systematically into the fire. The technique of this process is described later. The difliculty of combustion is not insuperable, especially if the supply of fuel is ample. To be efficient, incinerators'must be of such a type as to destroy completely and rapidly all material without emitting odorous gases in or about the camp. Closed incinerators are mostly used, as in these it is possible to produce a hot fire before introduction of the material to be burned. They are provided with baffle plates, which intercept and divert the products of combustion as they leave the fire grate, and insure their complete reduction to simpler gaseous products. (fig.
