He knows that he is acquiring a healthy, breezy tempera ment, a large measure of self - control, a respect for authority, or is at least learning the lesson to obey; that, if he began a bit wild, he is being licked into shape that he is excelling in games, and games will make him manly and strong. So, cheered by all these good qualities in his son, by no means superficial, but appearing more readily on the surface than the defects, he not unnaturally forgets to think of the other questions.
