Description

The true account of two young girls, one Japanese American, and the other Caucasion, growing up just five miles apart during World War II. Dee and her family were were interned at Manzanar, where her father served as the Buddhist minister. Joan lived with her family in the nearest town, five miles away, where she had the freedom to roam and ride her horse in the desert and nearby Sierra. They experienced some common events but each from the opposite side of a barbed wire fence that kept them from meeting. As adults Dee and Joan finally met while teaching at the same Bay Area elementary school. They discovered their bond over a photo of the mountain beneath which both had lived, and began to share their stories.
