Pope has certainly overlooked this, though in his notes to the Iliad he has acknowledged that to the transla tions of Sandys English poetry owes much Of its beauty. Dryden, too (preface to Fables), calls him the ingenious and learned Sandys, the best versifier of the former age; if I may properly call it by that name, which was the former part of this concluding century. Carew and Waller have ex pressed their Opinions in the commendatory verses prefixed to these Paraphrases.
