Description

It is human nature to yearn for predictability and control. Yet it is the nature of people to be unpredictable even when they appear to be under control. What can managers do in the face of this paradox? If human beings are so unruly, can any management structure, strategy or plan truly control, or even fully reveal, what is actually happening within the social world of organisations? Drawing on historical and contemporary theories of social and organisational behaviour, this book reveals why managers need to focus relentlessly on the 'reality of now' - the everyday interactions between people who are driven by their own feelings, motives and relationships. The authors argue that we should learn to embrace the complexity and unpredictability of the social process as an essential ingredient in innovation, creativity and progress. The New Economics Foundation is the UK's leading think tank researching innovative solutions to major economic, environmental and social problems.

Author Biography:

Tony Greenham trained as a Chartered Accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers before joining Barclays, and later Credit Suisse, as a corporate stockbroker. Disillusionment with investment banking during the dot com boom of the late 1990's, combined with a growing interest in sustainability, led him to an MSc in Environmental Assessment and Evaluation at London School of Economics. He joined the New Economics Foundation in 2010 to lead the Finance and Business research programme and also works with the Transition Towns movement - a network of community organisations pursuing practical sustainability projects on the ground. Tony is a sustainability advisor for Alliance Trust Investments and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He is a regular media commentator and public speaker on sustainability and economic reform. Ben Lewis worked in the financial services sector for a decade with JLT Risk Solutions, R. J. Carvill and Hyperion Insurance Group. During this time he observed that companies often working in their specialist commercial niche had little opportunity to explore sustainable development in a meaningful way. He realised that too often the focus was on making existing practice 'right' rather than exploring new commercial practices that inherently address sustainability issues.
