Description

When Ambrosine's grandmother falls ill, she is told that she will marry Mr. Gurrage, a man with money enough to take care of Ambrosine. Unfortunately, Ambrosine finds him brutish and disgusting. He is much too beneath her to marry, but she has no money of her own to be so independently minded. She tries very hard to be pleasant to Mr. Gurrage. Then she meets Sir Antony, a dashing young man, well bred, and much more Ambrosine's equal. And everything becomes complicated and confusing.

Author Biography

Elinor Glyn (1864 - 1943) was a British novelist and scriptwriter who specialized in romantic fiction that was considered scandalous for its time. Although her works are relatively tame by modern standards, she had tremendous influence on early 20th-century popular culture and perhaps on the careers of notable Hollywood stars such as Rudolph Valentino, Gloria Swanson and Clara Bow in particular.
