Description

Excerpt from The Student's Guide to Medical Jurisprudence In all departments Of medicine a certain degree of scepticism about the statements of a patient's friends is wholesome. In medico-legal questions, such scepticism is more than ever needed. The medical man should listen to the information that the friends may have to impart, and receive it courteously; but if it does not tally with the results, of his own Observation, he must not place too much reliance upon it, remembering that he never can tell what motives are at work. The subjects which have to be considered under the head of Medical Jurisprudence are the questions relating to the dead body, such as the age, sex, date Of death, cause Of death; the various modes Of death from violence; injuries from whatever cause; life assurance; insanity; and the whole subject Of poisoning. Certain questions in regard to the pregnant state and the duration of pregnancy, impotence, sterility and rape will also have to be considered, as also the important subject of infanti cide or child-murder.
