Author Biography

Elaine Sorensen Marshall, PhD, RN, is former Berneice Castella Distinguished Professor and Chair, Department of Health Restoration and Care Systems Management, UTHSA School of Nursing, San Antonio. Formerly, Dr. Marshall was Professor and Endowed Chair, School of Nursing, Georgia Southern University and Dean of the College of Nursing, Brigham Young University, while she also served as Member of the Board of Trustees of Intermountain Healthcare in Utah. Dr. Marshall has authored four books and has published 59 peer-reviewed journal articles, as well as 11 book chapters. She has served in national elected and appointed leadership positions for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), the American Association for the History of Nursing (AAHN), and the Western Institute of Nursing. Her work has been noted by the New Professional Book Award from the National Council on Family Relations, the Lavinia Dock Award from the American Association for the History of Nursing, and the Jo Eleanor Elliott Leadership Award from the Western Institute of Nursing. Marion E. Broome, PhD, RN, FAAN, is Ruby Wilson Professor of Nursing, Dean and Vice Chancellor for Nursing Affairs, Duke University, and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs for Nursing, Duke University Health System. Prior to joining Duke, Dr. Broome was Dean, Indiana University School of Nursing, where she was awarded the rank of Distinguished Professor. Widely regarded as an expert, scholar and leader in pediatric nursing research and practice, Dr. Broome was funded for over 20 years by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other foundations to conduct research in pediatric pain management interventions, pediatric research ethics, research misconduct in clinical trials and ethical dilemmas in publishing. Her research is published in more than 110 papers in 50 refereed nursing, medicine and interdisciplinary journals. She also has published five books and 15 chapters in books and consumer publications. Dr. Broome has served in a variety of leadership positions including the National Advisory Council for the National Institute of Nursing Research, President of the Society for Pediatric Nurses and as a member of the governing boards for the Association for the Care of Children's Health and the Midwest Nursing Research Society. Currently, Dr. Broome is editor-in-chief of Nursing Outlook, the official journal of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) and the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science. She was inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing (1994) and into the Sigma Theta Tau International Researcher Hall of Fame (2010). Selected honors include Outstanding Alumnus for Georgia Health Sciences University and the University of South Carolina, NLN's Award for Outstanding Leadership in Nursing Education (2012) and the President's Medal for Excellence at Indiana University (2014). Dr. Broome currently consults with a variety of schools of nursing and Magnet-designated hospitals related to leadership development, evidence-based practice programs, research implementation and professional development programs for nurses and faculty.
