Seems to have intended that his readers should infer that Dr. Barrow did not himself believe in the apostolic'origin of'episcopacy Let the following quotations from the same work bear witness with what justice such an opinion can be formed. Of the distinction between bishops and the inferior clergy, 'there was never in ancient times made any question, nor did it seem disputable in the church, except to one malcontent, Aerias -it standeth upon very firm and clear grounds, upon the reason of the case, upon the testimony of Holy Scripture, upon gen eral tradition, and unquestionable monuments of antiquity, upon the common judgment and practice of the greatest saints, persons most te nowned for wisdom and piety in the church. - The Holy Scripture doth plainly enough countenance this distinction; for therein we have repte sented one angel presiding over several presbyters; therein we find epis copal ordination and jurisdiction exercised; we have one bishop consti tuting presbyters in divers cities of his diocese.
