Description

George Armstrong Custer's fabled Fifth Regiment fougth with great distinction throughout the American Civil War and suffered teh third highest total of men in the Union cavalry who were either killed in action or died of their wounds. James Henry Avery was one of Custer's feared "Wolverines." Besides his eloquently recorded personal experiences, Sergeant Avery's wartime journals and postwar reminiscences provide uniquely detailed descriptions of Civil War cavalry movements. Introduced and annotated by Eric J. Wittenberg, and award-winning authority of the Union cavalry.

Author Biography:

Karla Jean Husby, James Henry Avery's great-great-granddaughter, lives in Marysville, Washington. Eric J. Wittenberg's many books include Glory Enough for All (Brassey's, Inc., 2001), Little Phil (Brassey's, Inc., 2002), and The Union Cavalry Comes of Age (Brassey's, Inc., 2003). He lives in Columbus, Ohio.
