The old typical idea of the two 'jerusalems, the upper 'and the lower, is known to all but now we have what appears at first to be a third Jerusalem this is the ancient city, which recent explorations have made visible after the ruins of ages have accumulated over it. The words Underground Jerusalem are here used as descriptive of what has been discovered. Shafts have been sunk to various depths, from a few feet down as far as 125 feet, and in every case there has been found the work of man. In some instances it has been built walls, excavated tunnels, conduits, or cisterns, old pavements, or supposed tombs; in many cases it was difficult to guess the purpose for which they were made. The debris covering all this consists of fragments of pottery and other vestiges of man's handiwork, the whole telling us of the generations passed away who have lived in the sacred city.
