Description

Excerpt from Underground Jerusalem: Descriptive Catalogue of the Above Collection of Water-Colour Drawings Mr. Simpson was also honoured with the gracious commands of her Majesty the Queen to paint pictures for her in some of the above-mentioned countries. The present collection contains the artist's most careful work of the past three years, and in these drawings his best and ripest powers have been put forth. Bold, solid, and masterly in their character, they manifest thorough artistic work of sterling quality, and are absolutely free from all attempt at elegant prettiness, and the mere pleasing picture-making of decorative art. As such they are commended to the notice of the artist, the critic, and the intelligent connoisseur - of those, in short, who, having keen and deep insight into the principles of highest art, are true and competent judges. The old typical idea of the two 'jerusalems, the upper 'and the lower, is known to all but now we have what appears at first to be a third Jerusalem this is the ancient city, which recent explorations have made visible after the ruins of ages have accumulated over it. The words Underground Jerusalem are here used as descriptive of what has been discovered. Shafts have been sunk to various depths, from a few feet down as far as 125 feet, and in every case there has been found the work of man. In some instances it has been built walls, excavated tunnels, conduits, or cisterns, old pavements, or supposed tombs; in many cases it was difficult to guess the purpose for which they were made. The debris covering all this consists of fragments of pottery and other vestiges of man's handiwork, the whole telling us of the generations passed away who have lived in the sacred city.
