Author Biography:

Julia Hickey is an associate lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University with responsibility for Adult Education. She is also the author of other titles in the Understanding Sport Series. About the consultant: David Whitaker spent 14 years in leadership roles in education and played international hockey. In 1980, he was appointed the Coach to both England and Great Britain and, during the next eight years, contributed to the unparalleled success of the men's teams. This included Olympic Bronze (1984), World and European Silvers (1986 and 1987), culminating in Olympic Gold in 1988. He is also a Master Coach for the International Hockey Federation. In recognition of his achievements and understanding of coaching, David was awarded the OBE in 1989 and chosen as Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1988.
