There is nothing that is merely theoretical. Many things other than those alluded to have also been tried, and, having proved failures, have been laid aside. Nothing but what came through the fire of experience unscathed has been dwelt upon. Not all the methods recommended have been originated by the author. In fact, the land was ransacked during the time of his actual superintendency for helpful methods, and, wherever these were found, they were adopted. Some times they had to be adapted, as well as adopted, and this will probably be the case in many schools who try to take up with some of the reforms suggested. But if the suggestions given here serve to stimulate others in the line of advance the aim of the book will have.
