Description

The beautiful Circassian princess Bela is kidnapped by a man named Azamat, who trades her for a horse. She is taken to the home of Pechorin, a man who treats women as an incentive for endless conquests and does not consider them worthy of any particular respect. After living together for some time, Bela becomes completely devoted to Pechorin, but Pechorin starts explicating his need for freedom. Bela fears he may leave her, but is soon kidnapped once again by Pechorin's enemy, Kazbich. A Hero of Our Time is an example of the superfluous man novel, noted for its compelling antihero. Pechorin is a character of contradiction, both sensitive and cynical. His philosophy concerning existence is oriented towards the nihilistic, creating in him somewhat of a distanced, alienated personality. He is possessed of extreme arrogance, yet has a deep insight into his own character and epitomizes the melancholy of the Romantic hero who broods on the futility of existence and the certainty of death. This case laminate collector's edition includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket.

Author Biography:

Mikhail Lermontov (15 October 1814 - 27 July 1841) was a Russian Romantic writer, poet, and painter. He is considered the most important Russian poet after Alexander Pushkin's death in 1837 and the greatest figure in Russian Romanticism. His influence on later Russian literature is still felt in modern times, not only through his poetry, but also through his prose, which founded the tradition of the Russian psychological novel. A Hero of Our Time, a set of five loosely linked stories unfolding the drama of the two conflicting characters, Pechorin and Grushnitsky, who move side by side towards a tragic finale as if driven by destiny itself, proved to be Lermontov's magnum opus. Vissarion Belinsky praised it as a masterpiece. In Russia A Hero of Our Time seems to have never lost its relevance: the title itself became a token phrase explaining dilemmas haunting this country's intelligentsia. And Lermontov's reputation as an 'heir to Pushkin' there is seldom doubted.
