Description

"I am always keen to read anything written by Colin Davies - he presents everything as if he and the reader are having a cheerful conversation about a subject by which they are both fascinated, and he shares his excitement by narrating history in a sequence of dazzling anecdotes - telling of the meetings, the arguments, the 'eureka-moments' - which were the foundations of Modern Architecture. He brings the creators' ideas events to life. In other words - this book is like no other. The amazingly well-researched illustrations are often a revelation - as are all his words.", Tom Heneghan, Professor of Architecture, Shibaura Institute of Technology, Japan A New History of Modern Architecture (paperback) combines a fascinating, thought-provoking and - above all - readable text with over 800 photographs, plans and sections, this exciting new reading of modern architecture is a must for students and architecture enthusiasts alike. Organised largely as a chronology, chapters necessarily overlap to allow for the discrete examination of key themes including typologies, movements and biographical studies, as well as the impact of evolving technology and country-specific influences. 'An accessible, open-minded and informative overview' - Rowan Moore, The Observer 'Seemingly without prejudice, Colin Davies corrals in an extraordinary range of buildings and ideas, applying an unrelenting intelligence to every part. The book is sure to soon be at the elbow of history and theory teachers in every school of architecture. It is an extraordinary achievement' - Architecture Today 'The book is informative and a joy to read. It provides a lucid introduction to the architecture of the last century, together with an excellent chapter-by-chapter bibliography to point readers towards more in-depth reference sources.' - Building Engineer
