Excerpt from Academia Terra Mariae, 1911, Vol. 7 The subject of this sketch was born in Baltimore and received his elementary and secondary education in the public schools of his native city, graduating from the Baltimore City College in 1888. In the fall of the same year he entered the undergraduate depart ment of the Hopkins University, being fortunate enough to win a scholarship for the first year in competitive examination. During the three years of the undergraduate course his principal subjects were chemistry and biology, together with Physics, German, French and such other studies as go to make up a liberal education. He graduated with the degree of A. B. In 1891, and again had the good fortune to win a scholarship. He continued his studies-in the Post Graduate Department, pursuing chemistry as principal subject, with l'hvsics, Mathematics and Crystallography as subordinates. He received the degree of Doc tor of Philosophy in 1895, and in the fall of the same year entered the faculty of the Maryland College of Pharmacy, where he established the course in Plant Histology and was associated with Dr. Simon in Chemistry. After Dr. Simon withdrew from the faculty the whole work of the chemical department fell upon him. About the year 1900 he also accepted the lecture course in first-year chemistry in the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Baltimore, which he resigned in 1904, when the Maryland College of Pharmacy became affiliated with the University of Maryland as the Department of Pharmacy. Since this affiliation took place he has been in charge of the chemical laboratory course in the Medical Department of the University, in addition to the work in the Department of Phar macv.
